Austin Community College Choreographers’ Showcase

These were motion graphics pieces created by Sarah for Darla Johnson. They were projected on the rear projection screen of the ACC main stage at the Rio Grande campus. Each was designed to be projected behind a group of dancers to emphasize a choreographic concept throughout their respective dance pieces. The descriptions are below.

2017

The choreographic inspiration for the piece was centered around discrimination and acceptance, discord and community, separation and gathering. Johnson particularly wanted to highlight the Hate Map she had discovered online. Sarah then recalled the pin-drops on the Women’s March website that displayed an oppositional message to the Hate Map. The resulting projection explored the aesthetics of art, maps, and color in relation to the sociopolitical movements of the beginning of the year.

2016

The choreographic concept for this piece was constructing self. The projection was designed to have subtle shifts in order to create a focal point for the piece. The large shapes and nude tones produce a serene feeling, or comfort, while also managing to be monolithic and powerful. The mandala is constructed not by the addition of other shapes, but by the absence of unnecessary spatial occupation. It then incorporates a section of the dancers themselves at a monolithic scale.

2015

The choreographic exploration of this piece was falling, it was called Gravity’s Promise. The projection was designed to create a 3D word cloud made of information that Johnson and her dancers compiled about falling. The camera pushes, and then falls through the word cloud.
